I'm sure Ryan Spoon is a very nice guy and probably an intelligent one (he writes well enough to indicate intelligence). But based on his blog of July 31, 2010 (which is the only one I've ever read) it's possible he works for Amazon. Which, of course is no bad thing and which could be why the blog entry in question reads like a piece of propaganda for the Kindle.
That blog is full of praise for Amazon's latest advert for its Kindle gadget. That's fine and good. But here's my take on the Kindle.
Electronic gadgets, gimmicks, call them what you will, serve only one purpose for adults, convenience. Be they mobile phones, Walkman and more modern music players, and now kindles and similar. All they do is provide the convenience of taking your phone, music, TV, movies, games, books, on the road with you so you can use/access them anywhere, anytime.
As Amazon says in its ads for the kindle, "Kindle: Buy Once, Read Anywhere". But that's pure bullshit, intended only for the unthinking public.
Intelligent, thinking people know, as I say at my website, "Real Books: Buy Once, Read Anywhere, Anytime". The convenience factor, applies to all the gadgets listed above. But while those devices are more convenient for anywhere access and transportability, one of them has no exclusivity on that score. And that's the Kindle, regardless of what Amazon's advert would have you believe.
Real books are at least as convenient. A person need buy a book only once and can take it and read it anywhere at any time. Unlike the land-line phone, stereo system, TV, video tape player, etc which are only useful at home or office.
And so, since it's intelligent, thinking people who I mostly have and want as my customers, I'm not worried about the Kindle.
